Vancouver Film Critics Circle Names 'Roma' Best Picture

The Canadian Press, 17 Dec, 2018 09:59 PM

VANCOUVER — "Roma" has racked up another honour, this time from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle.

The organization composed of Vancouver-based writers and critics named Alfonso Cuaron's black-and-white drama, about a live-in housekeeper for a family in Mexico City, best picture and best foreign language film on Monday.

Last week the Toronto Film Critics Association also named "Roma" best picture, adding to a string of accolades for the Netflix title, which also has several Golden Globes nominations.

The VFCC gave Paul Schrader's drama "First Reformed" a leading three awards, including best director and best screenplay.

"First Reformed" also won a best-actor nod for Ethan Hawke, who plays a minister going through a crisis of faith.

The best actor, female, category was a three-way tie between Olivia Colman for "The Favourite," Regina Hall for "Support the Girls" and Melissa McCarthy for "Can You Ever Forgive Me?"

Other VFCC winners included Bing Liu's "Minding the Gap," which look at the lives of a group of skateboarders, for best documentary.

Richard E. Grant won best supporting actor, male, for "Can You Ever Forgive Me?"

Rachel Weisz won best supporting actor, female, for "The Favourite."

Winners of the VFCC's Canadian awards will be announced at a ceremony in Vancouver Jan. 7.
