Eagles Legend Glenn Frey Dead, Celebs Mourn The Loss

IANS, 19 Jan, 2016 01:03 PM
American rock band Eagles' guitarist Glenn Frey, who was behind hit songs like "Hotel California" and "Tequila sunrise", died following several health complications at an age of 67.

As the news of the demise surfaced, celebrities including Carole King, Huey Lewis, Justin Timberlake and Niall Horan, mourned the loss.

Frey, a talented guitarist, writer and a founding member of the 1970s band, died on Monday following several health complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia.

According to a post on the band's official website, Frey breathed his last following a weeks-long battle, reports time.com.

The post read: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our comrade, Eagles founder, Glenn Frey, in New York City on Monday. Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia."

Actor and musician Steve Martin wrote a touching tribute following the news of his good friend's passing. He tweeted: “My friend from the early days, and important member of Eagles, has died. We loved you, Glenn Frey”.

"R.I. P. Glenn Frey. Deepest condolences to his family and #Eagles," King wrote while Kiss band members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons also condoled the death.

Frey's bandmates Don Henley and Joe Walsh shared their grief in a statement that they put out on the Eagles's official website.

Timberlake posted: “My mom used to play Eagles records for me on my way to grade school. We lost one of the greatest songwriters ever today. #RIPGlennFrey”, while Horan said: “Very sad to hear of the passing of one of my favourites of all time Glenn Frey... A man I had the pleasure of meeting and a man I had the honour of listening to all my life. #theeagles”.

The Michigan native co-wrote and sang most of the Eagles' hits, including "Take it easy", "Lyin' eyes", "Desperado" and "Heartache tonight".

He was a major part of the band, helping them land in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with several classics, and even took home six Grammys with the band.

After the Eagles's 1980 breakup, Frey launched a successful solo career, recording numerous hits like "The heat is on" and "You belong to the city". Frey contributed the song "Flip city" to the "Ghostbusters II" soundtrack, and "Part of me, part of you" to the soundtrack for "Thelma & Louise".

Actor Miles Teller posted: “One of the greatest voices, musicians, contributors and collaborators to rock n roll music has passed away. RIP Glenn Frey", while comedian Richard Lewis pointed out that he has always resonated with Eagles music."

Singer-songwriter Lewis was shocked with the news and described the late singer as a “brilliant songwriter and a really good guy. Talented, funny, cynical and sweet”.

Singer-songwriter Brad Paisley was also saddened by the news and thanked Frey for “the music that paved the way for so many others”.

Musician Nikki Sixx shared: “R.I.P. Glen Frey....Thank you for all the great songs and powerful lyrics...Jesus can the reaper please take break for awhile.”

In a joint statement, American pop rock band OneRepublic tweeted: “R.I.P yet another legend today. Glenn Frey of the the Eagles.... Ur music is imbedded in my brain til the day I die, u will be missed!”.

Kris Jenner wrote: “People don't run out of dreams, they just run out of time. The world has lost a great man, an amazing Father, a loving husband, a loyal friend and an extraordinary talent... you were one of a kind Glenn Frey. Your memory will always live on through your music. #love #GlenFrey #TheEagles”.

Frey is survived by his wife Cindy and children Taylor, Deacon and Otis.
