British filmmaker of Indian origin Asif Kapadia on Monday bagged a Grammy Award for his film "Amy", a documentary on the life of late singer Amy Winehouse.

He was honoured with the Best Music Film award for "Amy", which is also in the Oscar race in the Best Documentary Feature category.

"Amazing! Thank you @TheGRAMMYs #AMY wins Best Music Film @AmyFilmUK @amywinehouse @AmyTheMovie @A24," he tweeted after his victory.

The documentary uses archive footage to tell the story of the “Rehab” hitmaker's life and premature death. She died at the age of 27.

The filmmaker on Sunday won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) honour for the movie, which was premiered at the 2015 Cannes International Film Festival.

A three-time BAFTA winning filmmaker, Kapadia, born and brought up in London, will next helm a feature documentary about the soccer player Diego Maradona.

Kapadia's earlier films include "The Warrior" and "Senna".
