Amid the growing uproar over Tanmay Bhat's controversial video, which belittles two Bharat Ratna awardees -- singer Lata Mangeshkar and legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actress Sonam Kapoor has come out in support of the comedy group All India Bakchod (AIB) co-founder-creator saying she is “shocked” with people's “over reaction”.
Leaders of political parties across Maharashtra on Monday demanded action against Bhat over the video.
Not only politicians, many popular Bollywood celebrities like Anupam Kher, Subhash Ghai, Riteish Deshmukh and Satish Kaushik have also strongly condemned the video over Twitter.
However, Sonam feels that Bhat's video has been misinterpreted.
“Dear Tanmay Bhat, being your friend I know what you say and do is never to offend, but to make people laugh,” Sonam posted on Twitter on Tuesday.
“Don't you guys think there are issues that are more important than Tanmay Bhat's Snapchat jokes? I'm in shock with this over reaction.
“Being living legends, I know Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar don't even know and care about what's going on! Stop spewing hate on their behalf,” she added.
The video, which Bhat posted on Snapchat, liberally ridiculed and 'roasted' Lata and Sachin. It went viral on the social media and other channels and triggered widespread outrage.
Among other things, in the video, Bhat has shown a face-swap. Statements like “why the 86-year-old Lata was still alive” and “who was the better player between the 43-year-old Sachin and Virat Kohli” raised a howl of protests and condemnations.
