Bollywood's 'Baby doll' rocks Pakistan's Fashion Week

Darpan News Desk IANS, 12 Apr, 2014 08:57 PM
  • Bollywood's 'Baby doll' rocks Pakistan's Fashion Week
The popularity of Bollywood chartbuster "Baby doll" has transcended to this side of the border too, it would seem from how the catchy and peppy number is being used by multiple designers at the PFDC (Pakistan Fashion Design Council) Sunsilk Fashion Week 2014 (PSFW) here.

It was last heard in Ali Xeeshan's Theater Studio's show on day one of the fashion gala, which began Thursday, and day two also ended to the tune of "Baby doll" when acclaimed designer Deepak Perwani chose to play the hit track from Bollywood movie "Ragini MMS 2" for his show.

"We love 'Baby doll'. We just love this song and this is the reason it was a part of my show," Perwani told IANS here.

"Bollywood tracks are a hot favourite in Pakistan and we listen to them more than our songs," he added.

Composed by Meet Bros Anjjan and sung by London-based singer Kanika Kapoor, who is an Indian Punjabi Sufi folk singer, the number is picturised on Indo-Canadian adult film actress Sunny Leone.

It's the current rage in India.

At the fashion event in Lahore, the song seemed to set everyone in a jolly mood. People in the main show area at Expo Centre giggled and whistled - something that came across as unusual during the fashion event.

Some even shouted: "We love you Perwani and we love 'Baby doll'".

The designer, one of Pakistan's fashion world's popular faces who has made a name in the global space, made his debut at the PSFW.

His collection titled "Tre's Chic - Extension" was inspired by the chic trendy woman who loves to dress up. With a colour palette ranging from black, gold and burnished copper to accents in yellow, coral, red and green, the collection included menswear pieces and was focused on easy, wearable and trendy fashion.

For the collection, the designer infused fabric with digital print, studded-beaded embroidery, tie-dye along with stretch and crush fabrics and this gave an edgy and chic look to the garments.

It won't be wrong to say that his designs were very eclectic, classy and modern with excessive detailing in cuts, textures and motifs.

Talking about his take on Pakistan as an emerging fashion hub, he said: "Pakistan is rich in culture and tradition and we also we have huge talent. Our designers have shown their worth in shows outside Pakistan and we have taken Pakistan fashion scene around the globe, so I can see a good change coming in.

"I hope that it will grow in days to come," he said.

Perwani started his career in 1994 with a menswear line that changed the face of the category in Pakistan. He launched his debut womenswear line in 1996, with the opening of his flagship store. He produces four lines a year of pret and couture clothing for both men and women.

His collection was recently shown at the Pakistani High Commission in London under the patronage of the then outgoing ambassador Maliha Lodhi. The Deepak Perwani label has five stores in Pakistan and retails through 17 stockists worldwide.
